For centuries, the indigenous people of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa have understood the remarkable attributes of the Hoodia gordonii succulent. On long hunting trips the San Bushmen hunters would break off a cucumber size piece of the plant and eat it to maintain sustenance for days on end. In the communal Bushmen tradition, upon a successful kill, the hunters would not be able to eat the provisions until they returned back to their village.
In our business travels Kedric and I have had the opportunity to visit the Kalahari and meet the San Bushmen in person. We’ve walked through the desert with the tribal guides and had the opportunity of even sharing Hoodia together. They showed us particular plants from which they would drink water from the roots, we saw unique desert melons growing amongst dense foliage, and we found Springbok tracks which lit up their eyes. We listened closely as they shared how their ancestors were able to survive millennia in this sort of desolation.
The Bushmen are an amazing group of people with some of the oldest traditional knowledge in the world. They are truly a civilization of nature that depends on the provisions, what little they are, of the earth on a daily basis. They have depended on Hoodia, which they call Xhoba (Xh = clicking sound at the front of the mouth), has been used for centuries as a successful way of controlling their hunger.
We are grateful for their knowledge, that it has traveled to us, and that through POWERSLIM you can be empowered to control overeating. To learn more about our Hoodia cultivation projects in South Africa click here.
